"Children don't have the words to describe what they are feeling inside or what they are thinking so sometimes they act out to show how they feel. In play therapy, we provide toys... for children to use, to say with the toys that they have difficulty saying in words. When children can play out how they feel, to someone who understands, they feel better cause the feelings have been release. In play therapy children learn how to express their thoughts and feelings in a constructive way, to control their behaviour, to make decisions, and to accept responsibility." (Landreth, 2005, edited for brevity)
Play therapy is a developmentally appropriate form of therapy/counselling for children. Words and conversation about feelings, thoughts and behaviours can be really difficult for children and sometimes, even adolescents and adults. Expressing through play, art or creative means can help us process what these feelings, thoughts and behaviours may mean and help us integrate them to make better choices.
